Task Numbers: A Tiny Shorthand for Talking About Tasks with Claude and Cursor

Do this in 30 seconds

  1. Open your Today or Tomorrow list in TaskSpot.
  2. Click the #N next to a task (copies #7, #42, etc.).
  3. Paste into chat, or say "mark #7 done" if MCP is connected.

That is the whole workflow.

Prompts that work (copy these)

Once MCP is set up:

  • "What's on my plate today? Show task numbers." → today's list with #N on each row
  • "Mark #7 done." → completes task 7
  • "Snooze #12 to tomorrow." → reschedules by number
  • "Move #4 and #9 to today." → bulk move
  • "Update #3: priority high, due Friday." → edits by number

Wrong number or deleted task? Ask for today's list again and use the current #N.

#work vs #42 — 10 seconds

  • Tag (#work in the title) — label you typed; filter a theme; "tasks tagged work"
  • Number (#42 on the badge) — ID TaskSpot assigned; point at one task; "mark #42 done"

Example: title Ship release #release might be task #18. Filter by tag, complete by number.

When you need MCP

No extra config for task numbers — connect MCP once; "mark #7 done" just works.

Why bother (if you still want the why)

Titles are ambiguous. UUIDs are accurate and annoying. Numbers are how you already refer to items on a list — and they map cleanly to task_number in MCP (complete_task, snooze_task, move_tasks, etc.).

Typical wins: batch-complete after a session, snooze without opening the app, paste #42 into Cursor mid-sprint so the agent knows exactly which task you mean. Developer workflow notes go deeper.
